Mookie Betts Makes Great Catch That Is Eventually Ruled a Home Run by CHW 1B Jose Abreu

Talk about your all time backfires… The Red Sox who have been struggling as of late have been looking for some sort of glimmer of hope on this season. Mookie Betts defensively has provided that. Here he makes a great catch against Jose Abreu and goes flying into the Red Sox bullpen. Apparently because he didn’t maintain his possession all the way to the ground and lost the ball in the bullpen it was ruled a homerun… This pretty much sums up the 2015 Red Sox…

MLB’s definition of a catch: A catch is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it

It looks like he secured it to me…

This is a catch, he caught it in the field of play, made an athletic move and went over the wall in what was more for safety than anything… Since when is a catch in baseball defined by a catch in football?

FYI this was deemed a HR not because he went over the wall with it but because the ball came out when he fell…
